Abstract
609,782. Arc welding electrode holders. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., BAKER, W. F., and BROWN, J. W. March 22, 1946, No. 8887. [Class 39(iii)] [Also in Group XXXVII] A holder for a pair of electrodes to be used in unison especially of the kind in which two parallel rods are embedded in a single body of flux, comprises a body 2 with a tubular hand grip 9 and carrying a pair of electric conducting elements 15, 20 co-operating to grip between them the electrodes, the conducting elements being insulated from one another and being moved in a direction parallel with the axis of the hand grip to grip or release the electrodes. A body 2 of insulating material of I section in a hand grip 9 carries on opposite sides copper strips 5, 6, to which current is fed by members 7. The electrodes are held between a fixed jaw 20 and a sliding jaw 15 on the body 2. A spring 14 bears on the jaw 15. The strips 5, 6 are outwardly flared and pressed apart by a spring 35 and carry contacts 10, 11 cooperating with a contact 21 on a conductive strip 18 on the body carrying jaw 20 and with a contact 17 on a bar 16 sliding on the opposite side of the body 2 and contacting the jaw 15. A yoke member 22 pivoted at 23 on the body 2 is moved by a lever 24. Pins 27, 28 on extensions 29, 30 of the strips 5, 6 engage in cam slots 25, 26 in each limb of the yoke so that downward movement of the lever 24 closes the contacts. The sliding bar 16 carries a block 31 having pins 34 in slotted links 32 on the yoke, so that when the lever 24 is moved upwardly, the bar 16 draws back the jaw 15 to release the electrodes. The jaws 15, 20 may be connected to separate phases of a two phase supply. Two separate levers on opposite sides of the holder may be operated, one by the fingers to control the switch, and the other by the thumb to release the electrodes. In Fig. 3 the electrodes are gripped between a conducting rod 36 and the wall 38 of an aperture in a conducting tube 40 sliding on an insulating sleeve 41 on the fixed rod 36. A spring 43 urges the tube 40 back to grip the electrodes. Within a hand grip 37 are two two-pole switches 50 each having a conductive bridge 51 bearing on a pair of contacts 48. The switches are operated by a lever 54 pivoted at 57 on the body to connect the two supply cables 47, one to the rod 36 and the other to the tube 40. The lever 54 closes the switches against a spring 53 through an insulating thimble 55. A pin 58 passes through slots in the sides of the holder and through the tube 40, so that on moving the lever 54 away from the holder, the pin 58 is engaged by lugs on a yoke 56 on the lever so as to move the tube 42 forwards to release the electrodes. The switch contacts are copper faced with silver. The electrodes may extend at 45 degrees to the plane of movement of the lever. Specification 593,350 is referred to.
