Abstract

609,490. Making compound sheets. KINTNEY, J. Sept. 17, 1945, No. 23924. Convention date, July 24, 1944. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Soldering and brazing.- A method of .making a multi - ply sheet of austenitic stainless steel and oxygen-free copper or silver comprises separately rolling each metal to sheet of substantially final gauge, cutting from the sheets pieces of substantially final form, cleaning the surfaces of the cut pieces, forming a multi-ply assembly by matching such pieces with their cleaned faces in contact then pressing them into intimate contact while maintaining them at a temperature of from 1500‹ to 1850‹ F. for a period sufficient to anneal the stainless steel and to bond the pieces together. A number of sets of component sheets to be bonded are stacked with intervening separator sheets on a base 6 formed with a surrounding trough 10 filled with an inert salt which melts at the temperatures employed. A cover 8 rests on the stacked sheets and the sides 7 of the cover dip into the trough 10 to form a seal. The sheets are heated to the required temperature as by means of resistance elements 11 and are compressed by the press ram 16 bearing on the top of the cover 8. If it is desired to bond outer stainless steel layers to a copper sheet, the steel layers are preferably rolled to a thickness of 0.01 inch and the copper to 0.03 inch. In order to facilitate bonding, the steel is preferably given an undercoating of nickel 0.0005 inch thick and a coating of silver 0.00002 inch thick. Alternatively, the silver may be applied to the copper instead of to the nickel coating of the steel sheet. After assembly in the apparatus, the sheets are heated to 1850‹ F. and pressed for about two hours at a pressure of 1000 lbs. per square inch. The sheets should preferably not exceed 15 inches square. A two-ply sheet of copper and stainless steel or of silver and stainless steel may be formed in the same manner, the bonding temperature being from 1500‹ to 1650‹ F. in the latter case.
