[Class 83 (iii)] Boring-bars; chucks; face-plates.-A boring &c. machine comprises a motor-driven, reciprocating tool-bar which is mounted in bearings on a frame and extends through openings in a pivoted sub-plate and a rotatably mounted face-plate. The tool-bar 6, carrying a tool 36,. is mounted in bearings 2 and 3 and is driven by the motor 5. The bar is fed by a hand lever 8, fulcrumed and sliding in a bearing 11 pivoted to the frame at 12, or by a ratchet drive from the motor - shaft. Feed-limiting stops 15<SP>1</SP>, 14 and 15 and a central locking pin 18 for the hand-feed lever are provided. The face-plate 29 is rotatably mounted on the sub- or back-plate 19, which is pivoted at 20 to the frame 1 to which it may be locked by a pin. The backplate is raised and lowered by the .lever 24 fulcrumed at 28 on a short lever 25.pivoted to the frame at 26. The work, e.g. a bearing- shell 43, is positioned by the two jaws 30 and a radially-adjustable support 44. The jaws are mounted in a T-slot 31, are operated by the screw 32, supported by a sleeve mounting 33 which is transversely adjustable in the T-slot 35, and may be provided with a number of detachable pads such as 40, 41 adapted to engage the workpiece. A modified form of tilting pad 50, Fig. 11, is used for supportin gbearings at an angle inclined to the tool axis when cutting spiral grooves. For boring connecting-rod bearings, an additional arm- 67 is provided on the face-plate to which the rod 68 is clamped by a rod 59 and a screw, device 64 working, in a slot 61.
