[Class 46] [Also in Groups V and XXVIII] A filter for liquids or gases comprises a filter cloth or similar permeable material fitted over a grooved, ribbed, or corrugated deformable structure connected to a frame, the structure being formed as a closed impermeable tube. As shown in Fig. 1, a filter cloth 1 is supported by a ribbed india-rubber member 2 on a frame 3, the edges of the cloth being clamped to supports 6. For filtration air under pressure is supplied through a pipe 5 to the frame 3 and, passing through perforations 10, distends the rubber to the position 2A. The fluid under treatment filters inwardly through the cloth, passes along the grooves on the member 2 to chambers 8, and is discharged through a pipe 9 connected to a source of suction. The cake forming on the cloth is detached by relieving the pressure within the frame 3. A coarse-meshed gauze cylinder or a spiral support may be arranged around the blown-up filter element to facilitate removal of the filter cake. The pressure within the filter may be pulsating instead of uniform. The filter element may be used in a casing similar in form to the element and only slightly larger, so that a cake is formed which fills the space between them. Residual fluid may then be removed by increasing the pressure within the frame to extend further the rubber member. Fig. 7 shows an arrangement of filter elements 1 in a correspondingly-shaped vessel 15, and Fig. 8 indicates a casing with spacing blocks 14 between the casing and the elements, so that the cakes formed are of uniform thickness. The filters can be used to form tubes from clay in suspension, the tubular cakes being afterwards baked or otherwise hardened.
