Abstract
608,163. Sound recording. REY, S. May 11, 1943, No. 4889/46. Divided out of 582,178. [Class 40 (ii)] A printed sound record is made by pressing a moving paper strip 10 into contact with an inking roller 33, the pressure of the strip on the roller fluctuating in accordance with the amplitude of the sound to be recorded. The tape 10 is drawn from a reel 12 over a drum 16 and passes over rollers 28, 32 and 28a to the take-up reel 12a. Roller 32 is connected by the rod 6p to the reed of an electromagnetic driving unit 6 and is actuated to move the tape into contact with roller 33 in accordance with speech currents from a microphone M fed to device 6 through the amplifier 7. Drum 16 is driven from a motor (not shown) through a screw-shaft and is rigid with a fly-wheel 22 for steadying the motion of the tape at the recorder. The speed of the motor is controlled by a centrifugal governor. The rollers 33 to 37 of the inking system are driven by engagement of rollers 35 and 37 with the fly-wheel. Tape 10 may be in continuous or intermittent contact with roller 33, the record produced being of variable density type. The roller 32 may be of varying diameter across its width so that the record trace varies in area as well as in width. Spring-loaded roller 29 serves to smooth tape 10 on drum 16. Roller 32 can be adjustably biassed towards roller 33 by tilting device 6 about axis 6s upon operation of screw 6t. Records made in the manner described may be reproduced in the apparatus described in Specification 582,178.
