Abstract
<PICT:0608038/III/1> <PICT:0608038/III/2> A distillation and rectification process wherein the condensate derived from the heating medium is transferred, preferably by pressure difference, from the boiler to the condenser where it is used as the cooling medium for the process vapours. Fouling of the condenser tubes, due to hard water, is thereby avoided. In Fig. 1, steam condensate from heater 5 of column 1 is passed, through steam trap 10 and feed preheater 3, to open condensers 13 and 12 where the vapours from the column are condensed and the condensate is re-evaporated and given off to the atmosphere. Any condensate which is not re-evaporated passes away through pipe 20. In Fig. 2, the condenser 12a is closed from the atmosphere and may be maintained at super- or sub-atmospheric pressure so that the steam condensate re-evaporates at a temperature above or below 100 DEG C. as desired. The steam from the re-evaporated condensate passes off through line 21 while any excess condensate accumulates in tank 23 until it is permitted, by float valve 25, to discharge through pipe 24.
