Abstract
Organo-silica aerogels are prepared by first making a sol by mixing an alkali silicate and an alkali lower alkyl or aryl siliconate and reacting with an inorganic acid, then adding a water-miscible or anic solvent to precipitate inorganic salt and removing these from the sol, then heating the sol in a closed vessel above the critical pressure and temperature of the solvent and releasing vapour at such a pressure, completing the removal of vapour at sub-atmospheric pressure and cooling the vessel to 150 DEG C. or below, before opening. The alkali siliconates are prepared by dissolving a mono-organo polysiloxane in a solution of sodium hydroxide. The following reactants are specified: silicate-sodium or potassium silicate, water glass, sodium metasilicate pentahydrate; siliconate-sodium methyl or ethyl siliconate, potassium phenyl siliconate; inorganic acid-sulphuric; solvent-alcohol. There may also be present alkali solutions of silicones, e.g. of dimethyl, diethyl or diphenyl silicones, which may be added to the alkali siliconates or prepared in admixture therewith. The aerogels obtained are water-repellent and of very low density and may be used as buoyant fillers for life jackets, for heat insulation, and as catalysts or catalyst carriers. Detailed examples are given of the preparation of aerogels from mixtures of sodium silicates with sodium methyl siliconate, sodium ethyl siliconate, potassium phenyl siliconate, and the hydrolysate of a mixture of methyltrichlorosilane and dimethyldichlorsilane. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers also to the use of sols (obtained as an intermediate in the invention) for bonding or impregnating cloth, paper, fibrous mats and bentonite fibres. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
