Abstract

<PICT:0607283/III/1> A catalytic packing for liquid and gas or vapour contacting apparatus comprises a series of flat vertical sheets in face-to-face contact, each formed of one integral piece and having a lattice of regularly arranged lozenge- or diamond-shaped openings. Sheet 16 of metal or plastic are formed like expanded metal by providing closely adjoining parallel slits in a sheet blank and expanding the blank to form diamond-shaped openings 17, the sheets then being rolled. Adjacent sheets are desirably relatively displaced so that each opening is divided by adjoining sheets into four rhombus spaces 22. Adjoining sheets may be welded together at points of contact 24 of the sheet elements which form additional liquid mixing zones; some sheets may be vibrated edgewise to prevent clogging or promote turbulence. The packing may be of or carry nickel, copper or other catalytic material or support a viscous catalytic liquid such as phosphoric acid. Specification 607,284, [Group XII], is referred to.
