Abstract

Sulphur is obtained in the regeneration of gas purification solution in flowing up a series of vertical columns into the bottom of each of which a solid-precipitating gas is introduced, the liquid level being progressively higher in succeeding columns and a foam containing solids collecting at the top of each and flowing step-wise for removal from the first column. Fouled absorbent solution such as a thio-arsenate entering a regenerating tower 1 through a pipe 2 is mixed with air forced through a line 3, precipitated sulphur being floated thereby to the surface where it collects as a blanket 4 in a quiescent zone of greater cross-sectional area. Liquid flows through a level regulator 7 and pipe 8 to a second tower 9 from the top of which further sulphur foam 12 flows over a weir 16 into the first tower. The collected foam flows over a lower weir 17 to an inclined trough 18 and thence through a line 19 to a filter. Regenerated solution separated from <PICT:0607273/III/1> its foam blanket 12 flows through an outlet 13 and level regulator 14 back to the absorber. Modifications comprise a single tower divided by a weir into two columns, or coaxially disposed pipes and a circumferential foam-collecting trough.
