Abstract
607,099. Batteries. BURNDEPT, Ltd., RICHARDSON, R. P., LEWIS, R. W., and ROWE, L. R. Jan. 25, 1946, No. 2543. [Class 53] A cell of the layer type as described, for example, in Specification 579,986 is provided with an auxiliary negative electrode which is perforated and separated from but electrically connected to the main electrode. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the auxiliary electrode 5 rests on the rounded corners of the main negative electrode formed by the cup 1. The space 14 between the two electrodes may be filled with absorbent material or left empty to receive electrolyte which percolates into the space when electrolyte is poured into the cell. In a modification, the electrode 5 is corrugated or provided with pressed ribs to space it from the bottom of the cup 1. In a further modification, the perforations in the electrode are formed by pressing out tongues which also serve to separate the two electrodes. Slots may be pressed out in the same way so that the auxiliary electrode takes the form of a louvre. The auxiliary electrode may also comprise a wire wound into a flat spiral or bent into grid form with feet 11 as shown in Fig. 6. The spiral type of electrode or an electrode consisting of a perforated plane sheet may be separated from the main electrode by forming the latter with pressed-up ribs 13 as shown in Fig. 7.
