Application filed July 30, 1923, Serial llo. 854,618. Benewed January 12, 1926.
This invention relates to dry cells and more particularly to the construction of dry cells adapted to generate relatively heavy currents.
It is the object of the presentinv ent1on to provide a dry cell of the mentioned type which is eflicient in operation and simple to construct.
With this objectin view, I provide a construction in which one of the electrodos,
e.g. a zinc can is divided into a plurality.
of. compartments connected in multiple, each compartment constituting substantial ly a separate cell. The other electrode, e.-,g. carbon pencil is common to all the cells.
The invention will be more fully undertion of an embodimcnt thereof and the appended claims.
The drawing shows in cross section a dry cell of the carbon-zinc-manganese dioxid type embodying the features of the present irivention.
Within a zinc can 1 of the conventional type and size, four bobbins or tablets 2 molded, tamped or pressed of the suitable depolarizing mixture are placed. In assembling the battery, first a disc of paper 3 is placed over the bottom of the can 1. If desired, the bottom of the can may be made of paper or the like, or it may be formed of a separate piece of zinc like the plates or discs 7 to be hereinafter described. Then bobbin 2 s,urrounded on the two sides and its bottom by a paper cup 4 is introducedon top of the disc 3. The papercontaiher 4 is preferably coated with paste on the side facing the side wall of the zinccan 1. The paper cup may be introduced first into the can or it may be.lowered therein together with the bobbin or tablet 2. The
of which are connected in multiple. Prefer-.
ably, the tablets 2 are made in substantially the same manner'as described in my copending application Serial No. 654,611, filed July 30, 1923.
'. What I claim is: stood from the following detailed descri'p- 1. In a dry cell, a container electrode, a plurality of bobbins of de olarizing mixbobbins and contacting with said electrode,
and another electrode projectng through said bobbins.
2. In a, dry cell, a zinc container electrode, a plurality otbobbins of depolarizing mixture within said electrode, an absorbent wrap'per for each bobbin, zinc discs con tacting with said electrode, and separating adjacent bobbins, and a carbon electrode within said zinc container and projectirig through said bobbins.
3. In a dry cell, a zinc container electrode, a plurality of tablets of depolarizing mixture one above the other within said electrode, a pastd paper container for each tablet surrounding the bottom and side walls thereof, a paper disc covering the top of each tablet, zinc plates separating adjacent tablets, each plate having upturned 'edges resiliently held by said can, and a carbon electrode within said can projecting through said tablets, paper containers, discs and ates.
4. n a dry cell, a container electrode, a plurahty of tablets compacted of depolar- 1z1n m1xture within said.container, discs of t le same material as said electrode between adjacent tahlets and contacting with said electrode, and another electrodo projecting through said tablets.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 25th day of July, 1923.
WILLIAM F. HENDRY.
