Abstract
607,033. Prisms. AMERICAN CYANAMID CO. Nov. 26, 1945, No. 7266/48. Convention date, March 21. Divided out of 606,976. [Class 97 (i)] The liquid section of a Wernicke prism is fired with a substantially colourless liquid ester of an acid solution from the group consisting of ortho- and paramethoxy cinnamyl fatty acids and cinnamylidene fatty acids. The prism as shown comprises crown glass end prisms 5, 6 and the liquid prism 7, the whole being surrounded by a jacket 8 through which flows a liquid maintained at a constant temperature. Preferably, the end faces of prisms 5, 6 are normal to the prism base. Reflection losses in the prism vary with the angle of incidence of the light as shown by the curves given in the Specification; such losses are not appreciable for angles of incidence of less than 35 degrees and may be reduced by applying low reflective coatings to the outer surfaces of the prism. The liquids which are preferred for use in the prism, which gives a high dispersion and is adapted for Raman spectra investigations, being employed in the spectrometer of Specification 606,976, comprise esters of orthomethoxy cinnamic acid and cinnamylidene and propionic acid. The Specification includes data obtained with the use of esters of the group. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 also describes a prism wherein certain esters of the group are used and have been cooled under pressure to form an optically isotropic solid. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
