Abstract

<PICT:0606465/III/1> Solid materials impregnated with liquids are treated in a tower containing ramps provided with louvres or blinds sloping alternately in opposite directions, each ramp receiving the products treated on the next upper ramp, the louvres or blinds permitting the passage of a gaseous current through the treated products, the movement of the products from ramp to ramp being ensured by vibrating the tower by means of vibrators provided outside the walls of the tower. The tower may be made of an acid resistant material such as basalt, wood treated with the material known by the Registered Trade Mark "Bakelite," steel sheet with an inner ebonite lining, lava, or reinforced concrete lined with ceramics. Each ramp consists of heeled ceramic slats 8 some of which are perforated (12 and 17). Perforated tubes 16 enable local sprinkling to be effected. Samples may be collected in troughs 13 and 18.ALSO:Vegetable matter such as wood is treated with acid especially preparatory to saccharification, or such materials are dried after hydrolysis in the tower described in Group III, containing ramps provided with louvres or blinds sloping alternately in opposite directions, each ramp receiving the products treated on the next upper ramp, the louvres or blinds permitting the passage of a gaseous current through the treated products, the movements of the products from ramp to ramp being ensured by vibrating the tower by means of vibrators outside the walls of the tower.
