Abstract
606,174. Hopper and plunger machines. ANTONIETTI, G. Dec. 30, 1939, Nos. 33105 and 33106. Convention dates, March 31, and Sept. 30. [Class 87(ii)] Plastic materials, e.g. meat, are compressed and severed into disc-like shapes in a machine of the hopper and plunger type in which the plunger is given a rotary as well as an axial motion and the hopper is provided with a removable end wall automatically withdrawn laterally to permit removal of the moulded disc and arranged on its return movement to separate the disc from the face of the plunger. A cylindrical hopper 1 is provided with a piston 2 and removable end wall 7. The piston is operated by an electric motor driving a worm wheel 35 through a worm 36, and is moved under a pressure determined by a spring 61 compressed by a four-cornered rod 29 which terminates at its rear end in an extension 30 connected by means of a ball race 31 with a slide 33 sliding within a prismatic guide 34. The drive from the worm wheel 35 is applied to a sleeve 56 mounted on the plunger and carrying a pinion 43 in which travels a pin projecting from the slide 33. The movement of the plunger is thus determined by the cam groove which is shaped to give a slow forward movement a period of rest, and a quick backward movement. The sliding withdrawal of the end wall is controlled correspondingly by a second cam formed on the other side of the disc 44 which actuates a rod 11 and lever 49 having a pin 51 moving in an arcuate slot in the wall 7. A cutting action is imparted to the plunger by notches 64 having cutting edges 65, Fig. 9. Cutters may also be provided on the perimeter of the hopper. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes apparatus in which the piston is rigidly attached to a rod rotated by a pulley engaging in double threaded projections provided on the surface of the rod which also carries a projecting arm which engages with a projection on a rod operating the end wall. Fig. 5 (Cancelled) shows a simpler form in which the meat fibres are compressed in the cylinder 1 by a plunger 2 operated by hand pressure. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
