Abstract

605,702. Compound sheet materials. MARATHON CORPORATION. Jan. 12, 1945, Nos. 1021 and 1022. Convention dates, Jan. 22, 1944. Drawings to Specification. [Class 140] [Also in Group XVII] A compound sheet material for adhesive purposes consists of two layers differing widely in porosity or permeability united by a thermoplastic adhesive which is confined to the inner surfaces of the layers but is present in sufficient quantity to migrate and exude through the more porous sheet upon the application of heat and pressure. The porous or permeable layer may be of thin tissue paper. The less permeable layer may be of paper, paper-board, glassine, parchment paper, regenerated cellulose, cellulose acetate, ethyl cellulose, rubber hydrochloride, vinyl resin, or metal foil. The less permeable layer, when of paper, may be coated and supercalendered for printing purposes, may be laminated, or provided with adhesive and a porous layer on both sides. The porous paper layer may be treated with urea- or melamine-formaldehyde resin to increase its wet strength, and both the porous and the non-porous layers may be waxed or wax-sized. The adhesive may be a microcrystalline wax or paraffin wax having one or more added ingredients such as natural.or synthetic rubber, rubber-like gums, resins, polymerized butylene or isobutylene, metallic soaps such as aluminium stearate. oleate, or palmitate; a cellulose derivative composition; a synthetic resin such as phenol- or urea-formaldehyde resin, ester gum, or vinyl resin; asphalt; a rubber-like gum; a protein such as zein or casein. The adhesive composition may be applied only in certain areas, e.g. marginal bands or stripes, spaced areas or spots, or discrete particles. Alternatively the porous layer may be lacquered at certain areas to prevent penetration by the adhesive. The material is suitable for labels, bottle closures, or wrappers, or may be made up into bags or containers which may have heatsealable flaps. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 describes also the use as the porous layer of woven or knitted fabric or net or dense materials such as glassine, parchment paper, regenerated cellulose or metal foil provided with slits or perforations. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
