605,578. Mine cooling. McGUINNESS. M: Sept. 27, 1945, Nos. 25053/45, 33596/45, and 5519/46. [Class 29] A refrigerant such as carbon dioxide is liquefied at the surface and conveyed through a high pipe 7 to the mine workings 16 where it is vaporized in an evaporator ..14 and may drive an expansion engine 11. The refrigerent flows in a closed circuit, the up-flow pipes 18 for the expanded refrigerant being arranged in the downcast ventilating shaft 17 so as to abstract heat from the incoming air. The downflow pipe 7 is arranged in the upcast ventilating shaft 8 so that the air removes from the refrigerant the heat due to autocompression in the high column. The carbon dioxide is liquefied by a compressor 3, cooler 5 and sub-cooler 6 and fed to the descending column 7 which may be 6,000 feet in height, to the engine 11 driving a dynamo 12. An intermediate decompression engine 11a may be provided, driving a dynamo 12a. From the engine 11 the exhaust passes to the evaporator 14 at the working face, and thence through the pipes 18 back to the compressor. Ventilating air supplied by a fan 15 is cooled in the shaft 17. Valves 21 divide the circuit into sections and close automatically on leakage of refrigerant. The exhaust from the engine 11 may be passed to several working positions by valve-controlled pipes.
