Abstract
<PICT:0605519/IV(a)/1> Expanded, cellular polyvinyl chloride is produced by dispersing air or an inert gas into a paste of polyvinyl chloride powder and a non-solvent plasticiser, submitting the paste to reduced pressure and gelatinising the thus expanded material by heating in an alternating electric field. Air may be dispersed in the paste simultaneously with its preparation by grinding, for example, in an edge runner mill. Specified plasticisers are di-2-ethyl hexyl phthalate and tricresyl phosphate. Basic white lead carbonate may be included in the mixture. Apparatus for carrying out the invention (Fig. 1) consists of an insulated glass cell 2 containing the paste, placed between two electrodes 5 in a glass vessel 4 capable of evacuation. Thin sheets of mica 6 are so placed as to avoid discharge between the electrodes. In a modification, two opposing walls made of brass act as electrodes, the remainder of the cell being of glass. Heat losses from the walls which result in cooling of the outer layers may be overcome by completing the gellation in an oven, or by heating the container, or by using a container which is an imperfect dielectric.
