Abstract

605,165. Centrifugal spinning and twisting apparatus. PRINCE-SMITH & STELLS, Ltd., and WRIGHT F. Dec. 17, 1945, No 34105. [Class 120(ii)] The bobbin-supporting, carriage and yarn delivery means to the rotary yarn holders of an electrically-driven centrifugal spinning and twisting machine are so controlled that, if the electric power supply to the machine fails, the carriage is caused to rise and place its bobbins into the unwinding position in order that the unwinding will be completed before the speed of the holders is sufficiently reduced so as to cause collapse of the yarn in them, the delivery means being arrested after the carriage has reached its top position. The invention is applied to centrifugal spinning and twisting machines of the kind wherein each yarn is laid upon the inner side of a revolving holder and automatically unwound subsequently onto a bobbin inserted into the holder from below, means being provided for storing sufficient yarn above the bobbin for doffing to be effected without yarn strain. According to the Provisional Specification such a machine is disclosed in Specification 529,308. Bobbins 17, Figs. 1 and 4, are mounted on brackets 16 on a shaft 12 supported by rack pillars, such as 13, and having a boss 77, at the end of the shaft 12, slidable on a rod 78 which has a collar 79 positioned so as to be struck by the boss 77 when the carriage is lifted by the rack pillars 13 actuated by pinions 20 keyed to a shaft 19 rotatable by a coil spring. The collar 79 is struck as the bobbins 17 approach their unwinding position within the yarn holders 7, resulting in the rod 78 being raised to disengage, through arms 81, 84, rod 86, arm 88 and lever 90, clutch members 91, 92 to stop rotation of the delivery rollers 10. When the carriage begins to rise a lever 65 is released by a lug 67 on the rack pillar 13 and a clutch 56, 62 is engaged under spring pressure to transmit a positive drive to the shaft 19 in order to supplement the coil spring. After the yarns have been wound from the holders to the bobbins, the carriage may be returned to its initial position by rotating a hand wheel 21. Rotation of the shaft 19 by the coil spring to raise the carriage is initiated by withdrawing a latch 31, Fig. 7, from the back of a rack pillar 13. This is effected by a cord 32 wound partially around a pulley 33 on a rod 34 capable of angular movement by trip mechanism actuated by an electro-magnet 48 upon current failure or operation of a cut-out switch 50. Unwinding may also be effected when a predetermined amount of yarn has been delivered to the holders by arranging a mechanical measuring device to cause a lever 106, having a tubular portion 108 encircling the cord 32, to withdraw the latch 31 by moving against a fixed stop 109. Alternatively, the measuring device may operate a switch to cut off the current to the electro-magnet 48. A handlever 112 is provided to institute unwinding manually. A timing mechanism may also be incorporated to stop the machine a predetermined period after the initiation of unwinding. Both sides of a machine may be controlled simultaneously or they may have individual control mechanism.
