Abstract
605,145. Temperature-responsive actuating-elements. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Dec. 15, 1945, No. 34004. Convention date, Dec. 16, 1944. [Class 64(ii)] A temperature-responsive material comprises a metal backing member and a layer of thermosetting plastic dielectric material attached thereto by an intermediate layer of highly porous sintered non-compacted metal powder, metallurgically bonded to the backing member and interlocked with the dielectric material. In an example metal powders are sintered on to a steel backing member 22 by heating under non-oxidizing conditions till bonding takes place to form a layer 24 capable of being impregnated. Phenolformaldehyde resin powder is applied under heat and pressure to form a curved layer of resin 21, interlocked with the sintered metal. The metal strip may be curved while the dielectric layer is being applied, to compensate for contraction of the metal on cooling. Other metals or combinations of metals, and thermoplastic and other thermo-setting resins may be used as the dielectric layer.
