[Class 82(i)] A process for the condensation of metallic vapours consists of controlling the range of temperature of the condenser by bring- ing into contact therewith a single fluid subjected to the action of a source of heat and/or a source of cold, both sources situated apart from the condenser, the said fluid being caused to flow at high velocity between the two sources and the condenser. Apparatus for carrying out the process comprises a condenser 1, shown diagrammatically in Fig. 3, an enclosure 3 in contact with at least part of the surface of the condenser, a conduit 4' supplying fluid to the enclosure, from a fan 11, means for controlling the temperature of the fluid comprising a heating source 6 and a cooling source. Means 13 is provided to control the proportions of fluid supplied by the cooling and/or the heating source from the conduits 10 and 9 respectively. At least a portion of the fluid may be returned to the heating source through pipe 14, and if desired, a return pipe may also carry the fluid from the condenser to the cooling source. The apparatus may comprise a heat recuperator 18, either interposed in in return pipe 14 as shown, or associated with the source of heat in the same casing, means, such as valve 21 and by-pass 20, being provided to control the quantity of fluid circulating in the recuperator. In Fig. 5 there is shown diagrammatically, the application of the invention to a plurality of condensers which are supplied with fluid from a common source of heat and/or a common source of cold, means being provided for controlling individually for each condenser the respective quantities of cold and preheated fluid introduced to the condenser enclosure, and means for distributing the fluid issuing from the said enclosures respectively to the heating and cooling sources.
