Abstract

604,499. Valve amplifying circuits. BYARD, S. A., and WRIGHT, C. S. Dec. 21, 1945, No. 34753. [Class 40 (v)] An electronic amplifier comprises an automatic volume control arrangement having a circuit, the time constant of which when charging is greater than when discharging so that gain reduction on increase of amplifier input is slow compared with the recovery of gain. The circuit may be used in echo-ranging systems where a signal of short duration may be masked by the presence of noise of variable intensity. The output of amplifier 1 in Fig. 1 is applied to a rectifying device 5 to produce a negative polarizing voltage which is applied via the condenser-resistance network 7, 6, to the amplifier to effect gain control. A rectifier 8 is connected across resistanec 6 so that the resistance in the discharging circuit of condenser 7 is less than that in the charging circuit. To avoid initial delay in the operation of gain control, a negative polarizing voltage may be provided by means of battery 9, the circuit including a switch 10 which is opened when an input is applied to the amplifier. Further modifications allow for a small resistance to be connected in series with rectifier 8, or for resistance 6 to be omitted, when the control becomes effective substantially only for decreases in input amplitude.- Specification 457,614 is referred to.
