Abstract
604,287. Printing-machines. STEVENS, A. H. (Miller Printing Machinery Co.). Feb. 14, 1945, No. 3706. [Class 100(ii)] [Also. in Groups XXV and XXXVII] In apparatus for conveying sheet or other material to machines for operating upon the material in which the conveying mechanism is movable to and from the operating machine control means is provided for arresting the relative movement between the parts just prior to contact so as to prevent forcible striking together of the parts. As applied to means for adjusting a sheetfeeding mechanism 3 relatively to a printing - machine 2, the frame 5 of the mechanism 3 can be moved on rails 4 by means of screw-and-nut mechanism comprising a screw 10 and a nut 19 which is driven by a reversible electric motor 23, Fig. 5, and a belt 26 engaging a pulley 22 connected by screws 21 to the nut 19. The nut 19 is formed with a-flange 20 and has limited play in a collar 17 which is connected by bolts 16 to the fixed base 15 of the printing-machine. At the commencement of the drive of the nut it moves freely in the collar 17 until the play is taken up and then the nut is held from longitudinal movement and the screw begins to move, and at this time the motor has had time to speed u<p>. The screw 10 is connected by means of a stem 11 and a screw 14 and wedge 13 to a bar 8 which is connected to an extension 6 of the frame 5 by means of a pair of screws 7 surrounded by sleeves 7a, Fig. 8, riot shown, which are received loosely in vertical bores in the bar. 8, the sleeves being slightly longer than the depth of the bores so that the bar 8 may move slightly in either direction and thus binding of the screw is prevented. The movement of the frame 5 relatively to the machine 2 is controlled by means of limit switches 31, 32, which.are operated by an adjustable cam 28 to cut off the 'current to the motor 23. The cam is set so that the frame 5 is stopped just prior to contact with the frame of machine 2 so as to prevent forcible striking together of the frames. The frames are.finally forced together and held together by means of a catching-lever 38 at each side of the press which is made to engage a screw 46 mounted in a projection of the printing-machine frame. A, pin 41 normally holds each lever 38 in the position shown in Fig. 1, and at the end of the movement of the frame 5 to the left the curved end 52 of the latch engages the screw 46 and is raised thereby, but the latch is finally moved to locking position by operation of a handle 47 attached to eccentric bearings in which the latch is mounted. The handle 47 is moved clockwise to cause the locking and a re- .verse movement draws the frames of the printing and feeding means together. The latch is released by clockwise rotation of handle 47 which first rotates the eccentrics and then by means of a pair of pins rotates the shaft 36 of the latch positively so as to free it. The handle 47 is given a limited rotation only. Since the drive of the screw-and-nut mechanism is a friction one, the movement of the frame stops should an operator be caught between the moving parts.
