Abstract
603,433. Dropping guns from aircraft. POLLARD, L. A., SMITH, W. H., and TRIANCO, Ltd. Nov. 13, 1944, No. 22374. [Class 4] In an apparatus for dropping a gun by parachute, of the type described in Specification 598,239, in which the gun is mounted upon a sub-frame suspended by a main frame from the parachute and has a crash pan below it which is deformed upon striking the ground to absorb the energy of impact, the ammunition limber is housed on the sub-frame and is held in position beneath the muzzle of the gun. In the form shown, the gun 1 and its ammunition limber 2 are carried on the sub-frame 4 supported by the main frame 9 which is provided with a release connection 27 and parachute connection 28, preferably including an impact release device such as is described in Specification 598,239. A lenticular-shaped-crash pan 5 for absorbing the impact shock is provided beneath the subframe 4, plungers 6 being arranged above supports 7 with ductile strips 8 which resist impact forces in the manner described in Specification 603,431. Timber support members 11 are provided on the sub-frame to relieve the wheel axle 13 of the weight of the gun. The muzzle of the gun engages a member 16 carried from the airframe structure 10 by struts 14, and struts. 29 between the airframe 10 and the end of the gun trail 12 prevent upward movement of the latter upon release of the gun from the aircraft.
