Abstract

602,971. Motor - vehicle instrument panels. SUNBEAM TALBOT, Ltd., and WHITE, E. S. Nov. 14, 1945, No. 30413. [Class 79(iv)] A motor vehicle instrument panel is built up of separate panel portions of which one forms or encloses the top support for the steering column. The instruments may be arranged so as to be visible through the steering wheel which may have two or three spokes only. As shown, the portion 11 of the instrument panel carries the top support for the steering column, the speedometer 16 and grouped instruments 21, 22 being visible through the steering wheel 30. The panel 11 may be interchangeable with a corresponding panel on the near-side which may comprise a glove box or radio set, whereby the production of vehicles having either left or right hand steering is facilitated. A fixed central portion of the instrument panel may carry the switches for lamps and auxiliaries, although switches such as for trafficators, horn and dipping headlamp may be mounted on the steering wheel boss 15. The webs 13 may carry ashtrays, and the whole panel may be of moulded plastic or sheet metal.
