[Classes 79 (iii) and 79 (v)] [Also in Group XXIV] A cover 32 is secured to an instrument &c. pan 31, located in the centre of the steering hand wheel on a motor vehicle, by means of caps 37 threaded on to screws 36 welded to the pan or, alternatively, by screws passing downwardly through the cover and pan. The steering-wheel shown comprises an outer rim 10 connected by spokes 11 to an inner ring 12 secured by screws 13 to a central flexible member comprising in turn an outer ring 15 connected by spokes 16 to an inner ring or hub 17. The hub 17 is bolted to a collar 20 splined on the hollow steering shaft 22, the collar being supported on ball bearings on the upper end of the fixed outer pillar 26 and recessed to receive a lock-nut 21 screwed on the shaft. An arm 49 on the pillar 26 may carry operating means for the directionindicators, hooter and dipper switch. The instrument pan 31 is threaded to the end of a fixed tube 27 through which the conducting wires &c. 39, 40 pass. On the pan, an instrument supporting plate 33 is provided with tubular legs 34 surrounding the screws 36. The instrument casings, such as 38, are seated in apertures with their flanges resting on the plate and surmounted by a facing sheet of white celluloid or cardboard with scale markings &c., the cover 32 having a corresponding glazed aperture. As shown, the speedometer arm 41 moves round an oval scale 42, within which are located the other instruments, gauges, &c. Outside the scale 42 may be arranged the ignition warning lamp 48 and the lamp switch 47 adapted to receive the ignition key.
