Abstract
602,181. Packeting by wrapping-up. PETSKEYES, C. H. Aug. 22, 1945, No. 21419. [Class 94(i)] In a machine for side wrapping loaves of bread wherein the paper wrapping web is held on a table by a tensioning member so as to hang down in front of a conveyer so as to be wrapped partially round a loaf passing from the conveyer on to an elevator, which wrapping is completed as the elevator is raised to a position above the level of the table and the loaf is moved laterally on to a delivery table, the holding and tensioning means comprises a rocker shaft carrying the table, a pressure roller extending transversely along an edge of the table, between which and the roller the web is projected, means carried by the table for supporting the roller, and cam means for operating the supporting means relative to the table to move the roller into and out of holding contact with the web. The elevator comprises upper and lower plates 18, 19, Figs. 2, 6, 8 and 10, and in its uppermost position, Figs. 2 and 10, the web 40 is fed under a roller 39 over the plate 19 on to a table 43, being guided horizontally by a plate 35 fixed to the plate 18, and severed by a knife 42. A roller 24 to engage the web and wrapped loaf extends along an edge of the plate 18 and is urged outwardly in elongated slots in its mounting brackets by a roller 28 mounted on a shaft 30 and urged by a spring 33 against the roller 24. The table 43 is rockable, being mounted on a rocker shaft 45. A rotary shaft 50 mounted in bearings carried on the bed-plate 10 of the machine carries a cam 51 engaging a roller 52 journalled in end portions of spaced arms 54 pivoted at 55 in bearings fixed to the table. The arms 54 have enlarged heads with elongated slots 59 in which is mounted the holding and tensioning roller 60. In operation, a loaf B is passed from a conveyer 21 on to the plate 18 across the hanging part of the wrapper, the cam 51 being in a position to allow the roller 60 to rest of its own weight on the web and table. The table is then rocked to the position shown in Fig. 8 and the elevator raised, whereby the arms 54 are released from the cam and by the force of compression springs 62 urge the roller against the web to tension it. When the elevator reaches its uppermost position the table is rocked back to its normal position, the cam rotates to raise the roller 60 off the web, and a pusher 63 delivers the loaf on to the bed-plate 10, while a new portion of web is fed on to the table, the final side fold being made by the web's contacting a roller 63<1> carried on the bed-plate and co-operating with the roller 24. The end folds are made by means of arcuate slots 13 in end-plates 12 supported on the bed-plate.
