Abstract

601,868. Carpet sweepers. OYSTON, W. R., and NOVOBAX, Ltd. Oct. 9, 1945, No. 26298. [Class 138 (i)] In a carpet sweeper having no external wheels laterally of the sweeper casing, contact with the floor is afforded by a slightly protruding portion of an endless travelling belt located mainly inside the sweeper casing midway across it. A brush spindle 2 is mounted in bearings in the side of the casing 1, and the lower part of the spindle bears downwardly on and deflects the upper part of an endless travelling belt 13 carried on front and rear pulleys 9, 12 mounted in bearings in partition plates 11 inside the casing. On applying forward and downward pressure to the handle 20, also mounted in bearings in the plates 11, the spindle of the pulley 9 rides upwards in its bearings 10 so that the brush comes in contact with the floor. The front wall of the casing carries a flexible curtain 25 which trails on the floor, and on forward movement of the sweeper, the belt 13 drives the brush spindle 2 so that the dust is carried against the curtain 25, around the top of the casing and into a dustpan 15, while on rearward movement it is swept directly into the pan 15 over a lip 14. The spindle of the pulley 12 is mounted so as to be adjustable for tensioning of the belt by the operation of a lever 17 engaging a sleeve 16 on the spindle and moving the spindle horizontally. The brush is kept clean by cutters 23 formed of pressed-out portions of a metal strip 24 fixed to the casing roof, which cutters act as a comb for the bristles. The dust-pan 15 is pivotable on the plates 11 by a pin 15a, for removing the dust and giving access to the lever 17.
