Abstract

601,467. Sliding-clasp fasteners. SOC. ANON. SPEED. July 11, 1945, No. 17661. Convention date, Feb. 22. [Class 44] In a machine for making sliding-clasp fasteners of the kind in which a reciprocating finger at each stroke forces one of the elements on to the tape, moving first along the tape and then when opposite the element, transversely to the tape, the movement of the finger is rectilinear and perpendicular to the tape, and the movements are preferably effected by the release of springs which have been stressed during an earlier part of the cycle of operations. In the embodiment shown, the finger 4 ensures the feed of the elements one by one in cooperation with a needle 18 which holds the column of elements 3 in the feed passage 17 while the finger 4 is retracted. The tape 2 is fed step by step. The finger 4 is attached, through a vertically movable slide 6, to a horizontally movable carriage sliding in guides 7, 8. The slide 6 is a cylindrical sleeve which slides between the end of the carriage 5 and a plate 12, and carries at its lower end a lug 13, to which are attached the finger 4 and, above it, a needle 14. The finger passes through a slot in the feed passage 17 which allows it to move vertically and horizontally, while the needle 14 passes through a hole allowing horizontal movement only, so that during the vertical movement of the finger, as shown in Fig. 5, the needle is held up, and so retains the next element 3b, while the finger forces element 3a on to the tape. The movements of the carriage 5 and slide 6 are effected by the release of springs which are previously stressed by cams 26, 27, the former actuating a lever 29 which positively moves the carriage to withdraw it, and at the same time extends a spring 24, the forward motion of the carriage being effected solely by the action of the spring as rotation of the cam permits. The cam 27 operates a push rod 30, which through the lever 31 and rod 32 raises the slide 6, a spring 25 being at the same time compressed; the downward motion of the slide is effected solely by the action of the spring 25 as soon as the cam allows the rod 30 to drop. Mechanism for holding up the column of elements 3 in the passage 17 during the time when the finger 4 is withdrawn comprises a second needle 18, Figs. 1 and 5, fixed to a bell-crank lever 22. When the carriage 5 moves forward, a nose 19 thereon rocks a lever 20 and retracts a spring loaded finger 21, allowing the lever 22 to move to withdraw the needle 18 under the influence of a spring 23. The lowest element now comes to rest on the needle 14, while the finger 4 takes position above the element 3a. Slide 6 then moves downwardly, and the finger 4 forces the element on to the tape, while the needle 14, engaged in its aperture, yields elastically.
