Abstract
<PICT:0601446/III/1> A solid lubricant comprising molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, or zirconium sulphide, selenide, or telluride is disposed in contact with the current collector of a dynamo electric machine to reduce undue wear and dusting of the carbon brushes under adverse atmospheric conditions such as apply in aeroplanes at high altitudes. The lubricant may take the form of a moulded block 32 of finely divided molybdenum disulphide pressed by a spring 34 against the commutator 14 and carried by a holder 30 attached to an insulated ring 20. The molybdenum disulphide may be purified by extracting grease with a solvent and treating with hydrofluoric acid to decompose the silica present and volatilise the silicon. Alternatively pure natural crystals of molybdenum disulphide may be used. A small proportion of a carbonaceous binder such as tar, pitch, resins or phenolic resins may be added prior to moulding the blocks and the moulded bodies then heated to 150 DEG C. to 500 DEG C. under reduced pressure. A proportion of graphite may be added and the percentage of molybdenum disulphide which is normally about 90 per cent may be as low as 10 to 15 per cent. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 states that sulphides, selenides and tellurides of metals other than molybdenum, tungsten, titanium and zirconium may be employed. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
