Abstract
An electrical contact element, such as a brush contact or a movable bearing element, e.g. a rotating slip-ring, commutator, or shaft, particularly for use in dry or rarefied atmospheres, consists of a graphitic material and zinc oxide. Preferably, the contact contains a metal of high electrical conductivity, and may be made of a pressed and sintered mixture of finely-divided metal, such as silver or copper, and graphitic material in approximately equal proportions, and zinc oxide in about 5-30 per cent (preferably 10-20 per cent) by volume. The compressed mixture, enclosed in powdered carbon to prevent reduction of the zinc oxide, is fired at a temperature of 675-750 DEG C. In an example, a mixture of 40 per cent copper, 40 per cent carbon and 20 per cent zinc oxide is used.
