Abstract

Apparatus for cooling and solidifying resins, colloids, bitumen, pitch, and other substances, comprises an endless belt conveyer composed of fine mesh wire cloth of smooth surface, on to the upper lap of which the substance to be <PICT:0600685/IV(a)/1> <PICT:0600685/IV(a)/2> cooled is spread in a thin layer; low-feed atomisers for spraying a liquid coolant on to the underside of the upper lap over a substantial portion of the length between the point at which the molten substance is deposited and the other end of the lap; and atomizers for spraying a liquid coolant, such as water, which readily evaporates at the temperature of the molten substance (a) on to the upper lap of the conveyer just to the rear of the point of deposition of the molten substance and (b) on to the layer of the substance just in front of the point of deposition. At the delivery end of the band, the solidified material may be caused to scale off by arranging for the band to make a sharp bend as it passes round an end supporting roller. As shown in Fig. 1, molten substance from container G flows on to apron E and then on to band C, which is cooled by water sprayed from nozzles d. Cold water is sprayed on the upper surface of the band from nozzles K and from nozzles M on to the molten substance. The amount of water sprayed on to the material is preferably restricted so that it all evaporates before the solidified material leaves the band. The spreading device, Fig. 2, comprises container G with apertures O arranged above the band and uniformly distributed across the width. The flow is controlled by a spindle with conical valve P and centring needle P2. As shown, the liquid streams are first received on sloping aprons E and spread into thin layers, but they may be received directly on the band. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also apparatus provided with a steel belt instead of the wire cloth belt. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
