Abstract

600,189. Magnetic tests and measurements. SPERRY GYROSCOPE CO., Inc. Feb. 3, 1,944, No. 2030. Convention date, Feb. 3, 1943. [Class 37] A flux valve has one or more legs, each comprising parallel elongated core members of magnetic material, a primary or exciting winding producing a flux passing along one of the core members and returning along the other, and a secondary or pick-up winding including both members in its interior. The flux valve shown in Figs. 1 and 2 comprises three tubular legs 2 of high permeability magnetic material each containing an inner core 3 carrying exciting windings 4, 5 which circulate flux through both the inner and outer cores in opposite directions. The magnetic circuit of the inner and outer cores is completed through end members 6 and an integral or independent central member 7. A secondary or pick-up coil 8 surrounds the outer core 2. The three legs may be soldered or welded together at the centre, or an air space may be left at their adjacent ends, the core legs being disconnected. Collector horns 9 may be fastened to the core legs by screws 10. The exciting coils in the three legs of the valve may be series connected across a source of alternating current and the pick-up coils may be star connected. The opposing E.M.F's. induced by the exciting windings in the pick-up winding may be balanced by making the inner core member 3 carrying the exciting windings adjustable axially, or by making the intermediate member 7 adjustable axially. In a modification, Figs. 17 and 18, the three legs are formed by upper and lower Y-shaped strips or laminations 34, 35 of highly permeable magnetic material. These laminations are fastened to a central spacer 36 and their' ends are separated by spacers 37. The spacers 36, 37 may be of magnetic or non-magnetic material. Between the laminations of each leg portion is a core 38 carrying an exciting winding 39. Pick-up coils 40 surround both the laminations 34, 35 of each leg and may be adjustable along the legs to provide a minimum of undesired induced E.M.F's. therein. Collector rings 41 are fastened to the ends of the core legs by screws 42 which also fasten the flux valve to an insulating base 43. In another modification, three legs constructed as shown in Fig. 2 are arranged in the form of a triangle. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91, includes also a modification in which an axially adjustable magnetic ring is arranged over the exciting winding or the pick-up winding. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
