[Class 86] A machine for mixing concrete and other materials includes three drums movable into filling, mixing and emptying positions successively, and driven in rotation about their respective axes at least during the period for which they occupy the mixing position, so that there may be always at least one drum performing the mixing. Rotary drums 1, 2, 3, Fig. 1, shown in positions for filling, mixing and discharging, respectively, are mounted on shafts 4, 5, 6, respectively, journalled on a rotatable shaft 7 supported in bearings 8 on a frame 9. The drums are rotated by a motor 14 which drives through a chain 15 a bevel gear 13 in mesh with bevel gears 10, 11, 12 on the drums. A charging skip 20 is raised by a cable 18 wound on a winch 17 driven by a chain 16 and a toothed wheel rigid with that driving the bevel gear 13. The chain 16 co-operates with a bevelled toothed wheel 30, Fig. 4, in mesh with two opposed bevel pinions 31, 32 mounted loose on the driving shaft 33 of the winch 17. A control lever 21 operates a clutch member 34 to couple either pinion 31 or pinion 32 to the shaft 33 to reverse the direction of rotation of the winch 17. When the lever 21 is in the position shown, the skip 20 is raised by the winch 17, and a screw-thread 35 on the shaft 33 drives to the left a sleeve 36 carrying prongs 37a, 37b and a finger 44. The latter operates through levers 45, 46, rods 47, 48 and bellcrank levers 49, 50 to retract a spring-pressed rod 51 from one of three notches 53a in a cam 53 fixed on the shaft 7 to permit the latter to rotate. After a short time, the finger 44 moves out of contact with the lever 45, and the rod 51 bears against the cam 53 to engage the next notch 53a and to stop the rotation of the shaft when the drum 2 has moved into the filling position, the drum 1 into the mixing position and the drum 3 into the charging position. Immediately after this change of position occurs the prong 37a carried by the sleeve 36 operates through a lever 38, rod 39 and levers 40, 41, to open a cock 43 and close a cock 42, to empty the water supply tank 22 into the drum 2. When the skip 20 has been fully raised and discharged, the lever 21 may be moved manually or automatically into its opposite position to lower the skip and the carriage 36 moves to the right so that the prong 37b operates the lever 38 to close the cook 43 and open the cock 42 through which the tank 22 is replenished.
