Abstract
598,803. Surface - hardening worm threads. BROWN & SONS (HUDDERSFIELD), Ltd., D., and THAW, W. J. Sept. 11, 1945, No. 23363. [Class 72] In surface-hardening a helically-threaded member, e.g. a worm, axial translation, as well as rotation, is effected by using an adjustable stop or stops i engaging a flank of a thread to enable it to pass oppositely inclined burners g and quenching means h immediately behind the burners. The ends a<SP>1</SP>, a<SP>2</SP> of the spindle d are supported between centres b<SP>1</SP>, b<SP>2</SP> on, and are rotatively connected by carriers c, c<SP>1</SP>, to axiallymovable spindles d, d<SP>1</SP>. The spindle d is guided in a tailstock e and the other spindle d<SP>1</SP> engages slidably but non-rotatively in a sleeve f to which rotary motion is given.
