586,922. Converting rotary into reciprocating motion. FEILD, B. D. April 14, 1944, No. 6884. [Class 80 (i)] A member A is given a translatory motion having a single outline by the engagement of a pinion P with rack teeth D carried by a fixed member K. The latter has a recess J which guides the lower end of the member A. The pinion P is connected to a driving shaft by a flexible shaft B or like member, the interior of the member A having a flared bore C. Thus as the pinion P is rotated constantly in one direction it runs up one side of the rack teeth D and down the other side so that the member A generates a path corresponding to the line of the rack teeth D. Preferably the sleeve A revolves with the driving shaft and pinion P. As shown, the rack teeth D are arranged to form the letter I, but they may be arranged to form any other character or numeral in a character reproducing apparatus.
