Abstract
Sodium naphtha - sulphonates (mahogany soaps), practically free from oil, are obtained from the crude sodium naphtha-sulphonates by extraction under substantially anhydrous conditions with a polyhydric alcohol, e.g., ethylene, propylene and trimethylene glycols and glycerol, and a hydrocarbon or a hydrocarbon-soluble solvent for the oil, e.g., petroleum ether and carbon tetrachloride. In an example, sodium naphtha-sulphonates are extracted in stages by means of a mixture of ethylene glycol and petroleum spirit from a solution of the crude sodium naphtha-sulphonates in petroleum spirit.
