Abstract

598,133. Radio receiving systems. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd. Aug. 30, 1945, No. 22405. Convention date, April 16, 1943. [Class 40 (v)] In the reception of amplitude-modulated signals, noise interference is reduced by clipping the modulated carrier wave 22 between the limits 34, 35 to produce a trapezoidal waveform 40 having sides whose slopes are proportional to the amplitudes in the modulated carrier wave, and from which the noise fluctuations 23 are for the most part removed. The wave 40 is differentiated, giving a train of pulses 52 whose envelope 60 is substantially the same as the modulation envelope 30 of the noise-free signal. The pulse train 52 is finally demodulated in a detector circuit to obtain the audio signal. The system permits of amplifying the clipped wave 40 in stages producing non-linear distortion without appreciable distortion of the final modulation envelope 60.
