Abstract

541,665. Multiplex wireless signalling. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., BEATTY, W. A., and SCULLY, C. T. June 4, 1940, No. 9763. [Class 40 (v)] In a carrier wave system the carrier is amplitude modulated by time modulated pulses to represent one signal and in frequency or phase to represent another signal. The frequency modulated wave may represent the degree of volume range compression or expansion or the two signals may be stereophonically related sound waves. The receiver for the time-modulated pulse train may have a band-width covering the whole doubly modulated carrier and that for the frequency or phase modulated signal may have a narrow band-width. Fig. 1 shows the time modulated pulses and may be received in known manner. The frequency modulation may be detected by differentiating the pulses 11 and separating out the pulses due to the fined edges 15 to obtain pulses 17, Fig. 2, at equal intervals when a known frequency to amplitude conversion may be applied.
