Abstract
597,651. Continuous casting-machines. ANDREWS, H., and JAMES & CO. (BIRMINGHAM), Ltd. April 24, 1945, No. 10289. [Class 83 (i)] Moulds.-A method of producing continuous cast-iron sections consists in drawing the casting intermittently from a graphite die to the inner end of which molten iron is fed from a reservoir, applying heat to the inner end of the die to maintain the iron therein molten, and applying a cooling medium to the outer part of the die so as to cool the iron through the solidification point at the desired rate to give the casting the required physical properties. Molten metal from a melting pot 10 passes through a carbon or other block 13 into the die 16 which is heated at its inner end by burners 17 and cooled by water jackets 18 and 19 towards its outer end. Pyrometers 23 and an indicator 24 facilitate temperature control. As the metal in the die cools to form a solid casting ; it is withdrawn intermittently by means of reciprocating grippers acting on the previously cast material. The grippers are actuated by levers from a disc driven at a constant speed and connected to a reciprocating slide by a connecting rod. The point at which the connecting-rod is pivoted to the disc may be adjusted to and from the axis so as to vary the rate of feed.
