Abstract

597,611. Heat-exchange apparatus. HOWLETT, E. J., GLEDHILL, H., GLEDHILL, N. R., and GLEDHILL, M., [trading as THOMAS'S]. Aug. 23, 1945, No. 21628. [Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] In a heat-exchanger for fluids one at least of which is subject to variation of temperature or rate of flow or both, as in laundries, in which the incoming process water is preheated, separate paths are provided for the hotter and cooler wastes, the hotter waste from the top levels, after passing over heat exchange surfaces in contra-flow to the incoming water, and the colder waste from the bottom pass into separate receiving sections each provided with a discharge outlet, one of which is controlled by a device sensitive to temperature in such a manner that the proportion of discharge of the cooler waste increases as its temperature becomes lower. In the drawings, a tank or pit comprises an inlet section 1, heat exchange sections 2 and outlet sections 3 and 4. A channel 5, communicating with sections 2, leads colder waste straight to the outlet section 3 while hot waste flows from side to side through the sections 2 past alternate ends of the partition walls, over the final partition at level 9, into the section 4 where there is a free discharge 10 at the bottom. Incoming water enters the heat exchanger comprising tubes 14 between leaders 13 at pipe 11 and passes to outlet 12 in contra-flow to the hot waste. The overflow of cold waste into the discharging section 4 through a flexible pipe 18 is controlled by a weir 15 mounted on a counter weighted lever system 16 linked to a temperature-sensitive device comprising corrugated tubing 17 containing a liquid which is immersed in the colder waste. Alternatively a bulb communicating by a capillary tube with a Bourdon tube operating a mercury switch to start or stop an electric motor which operates a valve giving access to the compartment 4 may be employed.
