Abstract

596,878. Turning. BEHTHIEZ, C. W. May 10, 1945, No. 11703. Convention date, Dec. 1, 1941. [Class 83 (iii)] A control device for rotating, locking, and clamping a turret-head of a lathe or like machine tool comprises a single hand lever which when rotated-(a) in one direction about the axis of the turret-head effects unclamping thereof ; (b) about an axis at right-angles to the turrethead axis and towards the head effects unlocking thereof ; (c) about the axis of the turret head in the same direction as for unclamping effects rotation of the turret-head ; (d) about an axis at right-angles to the turret-head axis reverse to that for unlocking effects relocking and (e) about the axis of the turret-head in a direction opposite to that for unclamping and until movement is arrested, effects clamping of the turret-head. The control lever 3 is pivoted transversely at 4 in a bush 5 capable of limited rotative movement on a screw-threaded connection 6 with a long fixed hollow sleevepiece 7. Teeth on the end of the control lever engage circular rack teeth cut on a bush 9 secured to the end of a rod 8. The opposite end of this rod carries a pin 13 engaging a fork on the end of a lever 15 for releasing a locking plunger 18. The rod is urged by a spring 20 in the direction to maintain the locking plunger in engagement with one of a number of notches 19 in a ring secured to the base of the turret. The bush 5 is provided with clamping pads 23 which operate through a ring 24 fixed to the turret head to clamp the turret on its seating. The inside end of the bush 5 carries a pawl 27 which engages teeth provided at one end of a collar 29, the other end of the collar has a toothed periphery 30 which engages with pinions 31 on pivots fixed to the stationary hollow sleeve 6 and serving to drive an internally toothed ring 7 secured to the turret 1.
