Abstract

596,659. Shaft couplings; flexible shafts; operating clutches. JONES, G. L. R., and KESSEL, F. LLOYD-, (formerly KESSEL, F. L.). March 3, 1945, No. 5375. [Classes 80(ii) and 80(iv)] [Also in Groups XXXV, XXXVI and XXXVII] A driving mechanism for allowing several appliances to be driven alternatively by a single electric motor, comprises a flexible driving shaft and a mechanical coupling which enables the motor circuit to be completed when it is engaged. In one form, the sheath 6 of the flexible drive terminates in a bearing sleeve 29 for the driving end 8 which has ribs 9 for engaging in slots 10a in a rotary portion 10 of the driven appliance. In a modification the coupling portions 8, 10 may be interchanged. A square, preferably insulating plug 7 is fixed to the sleeve 29 and is located in an insulating fitting 15 on the appliance by an indexing ball 17. The motor supply leads, which may be combined with the silk braid of the flexible lead, are connected to sockets 22, 23 engag- :ing contact pins 30 which may be simply short circuited or connected at will by a sliding switch member in a channel 32. Alternatively the cover 27 on the flexible shaft end may be rotatable to produce switching. In a modification, Fig. 4 (not shown) a switch (see Group XXXVII) including a series connected manual switch, is carried on the flexible shaft end and has a projecting slidable rod which is operated when the two coupling halves are assembled. Alternatively, the switches may be fixed to the driven appliances and toggle-type switches may be used. If a high voltage motor is desired a step down transformer fed relay circuit may be energised by the engagement of the coupling, a manual switch being included as before or a flexible thrust wire can be used to operate a switch within the motor casing, a manual control also being fitted. A worm reduction gear drive for a mangle is shown in Fig. 10 in which a clutch 144 is released against the pressure of a spring 143 by a safety bar pivoted on a spindle 147.
