Abstract
596,068. Door and window frames. CARPER, A. B. July 17, 1945, No. 18308. [A Specification was laid open to inspection under Sect. 91 of the Acts, July 23, 1946.] [Class 20(iii)] A frame for a door or window comprises two spaced upright side jambs and a head jamb having adjustable connecting means such that the head jamb can be adjusted vertically at one end relative to one sidejamb and the other side jamb can be adjusted in the direction of the length of the head jamb so that the frame can be adjustably located and squared relatively to the door which is to be hung in it. In the preferred arrangement shown in Fig. 3 for an interior door, the frame is installed by positioning the side jamb 1 against studding 22 by means of a spacer block 11 and the resilient spacers comprising leaf springs 23 having integral prongs 24 which bear against the jamb and prevent its displacement. Coil springs may take the place of the leaf springs. The head jamb 3 is now positioned by the adjustable means comprising an angled clip one arm 26 of which is secured to the jamb 1 and the other 27 overlies and presses downwardly upon the jamb 3 at one end. A similar clip is provided at the other end of the jamb 3 the arm 26 being secured to the jamb 3 and the arm 27 pressing against the second side jamb 2 which can now be positioned by the spacer springs 23. A casing 18 covers the securing means and the door 9 is hung on the hinges 15 which in common with the other fittings may or may not be fitted in situ. Door stops 21 which may be formed separately or with the jambs are provided. Fig. 2 shows another form of adjusting means in which the head jamb 3 is formed with an extension 32 overlying the side jamb 2 and having a hole engaged by a dowel 31 projecting from the side jamb. In another form screws having washers pass through slotted holes in the head jamb and engage the end of the side jamb. In the arrangement for an exterior door a recess is formed at the foot of the side jambs to receive a sill member, the recesses and sill member being of such a size that the jambs can be horizontally adjusted.
