Abstract
Fibres, yarns and fabrics are dyed by a continuous process by subjecting them successively to processes whereby vat dye pigments are applied from a liquid suspension, the greater portion of the liquid is removed from the materials by squeezing, the materials are dried immediately, but only for a short period of time subjected to one or more baths of an alkaline reducing agent, they are then squeezed, and subsequently the reduced vat dye is oxidized on the fibre. The amount of liquid removed by squeezing before drying may be such that the moisture retained is less than 75 per cent of the weight of the fibres. The vat dye pigment may be applied by passing the fibres, yarns or fabrics through an immersion box containing the liquid dispersion of the vat pigment, and a substantial portion of the liquid then removed by means of a padder. In example (1), mercerized bleached cotton poplin is padded with a liquor containing Indanthrene Brown BRA paste, Calcaloid Yellow GCD paste and Calcaloid Grey BD paste, dried by passing through a hot flue, passed firstly through a three-roll pad containing caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite at 180 DEG F. and then through a booster box containing a lower concentration of caustic soda and sodium hydrosulphite at 160 DEG F., soaped, rinsed and folded. In other examples, mercerized cotton fabrics are similarly dyed, using (2) Ponsol Brown AGG double paste, Ponson Olive GGL paste and Ponsol Golden Orange 4G paste, and (3) Indanthrene Olive TA paste, Carbanthrene Khaki 2G paste and Indanthrene Olive Green BA paste.
