Abstract
595,498. Glass. THURSTON, A. P. (Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation). Oct. 5, 1944, No. 19106. [Class 56] Glass fibres of a diameter not exceeding about .001 inch are fabricated into an interlaced arrangement and are then leached in an aqueous neutral or acid solvent to extract non-siliceous constituents and leave a porous highly siliceous residue. The leached fabric may then be baked at a temperature sufficient to revitrefy the porous fibres but insufficient to sinter them. The invention is applicable to borosilicate glasses as well as to soda-lime and other non-borosilicates. Various examples of the compositions from which the fibres are formed are given.
