[Class 146 (iii)] A pencil or combined pen and pencil has a point-protecting cap comprising an outer sleeve and an inner sleeve, an eraser in a holder which is retained within the inner sleeve and an end cap for the eraser fixing over the inner sleeve. As shown, the cap 14 of a combined pen and pencil consists of an outer sleeve 16 screw threaded at 18 to engage the body 17 and fitted with an inner sleeve 20 which rests on a shoulder 19 of the outer sleeve 16 and projects beyond it, and a cap portion 15 fitting over the projecting part of the sleeve 20 and retained thereon by resilient tongues 21 or outwardly projecting ridges on the sleeve. An eraser holder 25 is formed with resilient prongs 26 to retain it within the inner sleeve 20, and the eraser 22 is provided with a ring-like member 27 to facilitate handling. A dome-shaped member 31, Figs. 1 and 3, fitted with an outwardly extending flange 32 rests on a shoulder 30 inside the outer sleeve 16 and is provided with ribs 33 to form compartments for spare leads. In modifications, instead of the screw-threaded portion 18, an expansible ring is set in an annular recess in the cap 14 and engages a corresponding recess in the body 17. In another modification the eraser holder 25 has, instead of the prongs 25, one or more vertical slits extending from the top almost to the base and may have small inwardly directed projections to hold the eraser. Fig. 9 shows another form of eraser holder 75 which is provided with a reduced portion 79 and a slotted portion 76 to fit into the sleeve 20.
