Abstract
595,303. Propelling aircraft. FELL, L. F. R. July 12, 1944, No. 13349. [Class 4] In aircraft power installations of the kind comprising two engines arranged one behind the other with a transmission shaft from one engine extending past the other engine to a gearbox on the remote end thereof, and two contra-rotating airscrews driven from the gearbox ; the engine adjacent the airscrews is provided with a flexible mounting for absorbing vibrations and the transmission shaft from the other engine to the gearbox is enclosed in a torque tube torsionally locked to the crankcase of each engine. As shown, engines 13 and 14 are carried by a boom supported from the aircraft at 27, 29, engine 14 being flexibly mounted and engine 13 being supported by a rigid mounting 37 and a flexible mounting 38 so that its centre-line 21 is below the centre-line 18 of engine 14. The side members of the boom are cross-braced vertically and horizontally between the two engines. Engine 14 carries a gearbox 15 and drives a tractor or pusher airscrew 11 through gearing 16, 17. An airscrew 12 is driven by the engine 13 in the opposite direction through a transmission shaft 19, extending under the engine 14, and gearing 20, 22. The gearing may be spur or epicyclic. Shaft 19 is provided with universal joints and enclosed in a torque tube 23 splined to the crank-cases 24, 25 of engines 13, 14, the arrangement be such that, if only one airscrew is operative, the torque reaction is taken mainly by the rear engine. Radiators 41 and 40 (not shown) of arcuate form are arranged arround the gearbox 15, and the cowling 42 is provided with adjustable shutters 43, 44 to control the air flow. According to the Provisional Specification, both engines may be coupled to a gear train arranged to drive contra-rotating airscrews, a clutch or freewheel device being incorporated to enable either engine to operate alone, and the power unit may be arranged partly in the wing or in the fuselage, the engines, in the latter case, being spaced apart to allow the pilot's seat to be located between them.
