Abstract
595,294. Statistical apparatus. REMINGTON RAND, Inc. Oct. 16, 1946, No. 30860. Convention date, Nov. 9, 1945. [Class 106 (i) Card analysing mechanism comprises a card chamber and means including a reciprocable pin box for sensing a record card in the chamber, the pin box having sensing pins, one for each card data position, disposed in horizontal rows and vertical columns, the centres for successive pins in consecutive data positions of a horizontal row being substantially equi-distant from opposite sides of the horizontal median line for the row and disposed on the respective median lines of the vertical columns in which the pins are located. The mechanism is designed for the record cards described in Specification 595,292, which is referred to, and also for known 80-column slotted cards. Cards are fed from a magazine 40, Fig. 12, by a picker 77 and are passed to the sensing chamber 44, Fig. 13, by feed rollers 39. The leading edge of the card is arrested by a block 21 on the stop bar 22 while the sensing pins 15, Fig. 14, which are staggered as shown, are thrust upwardly by an eccentric 48 in the usual manner to set up the data in the upper pin box 52. Where cards carrying a second set of data in the spaces between the normal rows are being dealt with, a manual control 92, Fig. 12, is set in the full-line position. This prevents the complete removal of the card stop after the first analysing operation. The stop control cam 68 has a fall 90 allowing a follower arm 69 to rock clockwise and, through linkage 70, 72, 71, 73, lift the stop bar 22, but an adjustable stop 93, brought into position by the control 92, prevents the complete removal of the stop 22, the skid rolls 76 merely moving the card forward under the block 21 and against the bar 22. The feeding of a further card is prevented by a latch 83 which withholds the feeding mechanism from co-operation with its actuating cam 78. After the second reading of the intermediate data, a high portion on a cam 88 rocks a belt-crank 84 moving the member 87 to the left so that the stop 93 is rocked clear to allow normal lifting of the card stop 22, and the latch 83 is rocked clear to allow card feeding to be resumed. When 80-column slotted cards or cards without data in the intermediate rows are being analysed, the control 92 is latched in the dotted position of Fig. 12, in which position the latch 83 is held clear of the feeding mechanism and the stop 93 is out of the path of the member 71 of the card stop mechanism.
