Abstract
Poly-ethenoid compounds are produced in granular or globular form by a process which includes agitating a liquid ethenoid compound of limited water solubility with an aqueous medium containing 0.01 to 1 per cent by weight of an inorganic substance colloidally dispersed therein so as to produce a dispersion of the ethenoid compound and maintaining the dispersion by agitation. Specified inorganic substances are the naturally occurring colloidal clays such as bentonite, montmorillonite and the china clays. The size of the granular or globular particles may be controlled by variation of the quantity of colloidally dispersed inorganic substance, or by variation of the ratio between the continuous and disperse phases, specified ratios being from 2 : 1 to 4 : 1 of aqueous media to ethenoid compound. Examples are given of the polymerization of methyl methacrylate containing benzoyl peroxide dispersed in a dispersion of bentonite in water.
