594,412. Lining moulds. UNITED STATES PIPE & FOUNDRY CO. Nov. 28, 1944, No. 23728. Convention date, Dec. 4, 1943. [Class 83 (i)] Mould materials; centrifugal casting- machines.-A horizontal centrifugal mould for casting metal tubes is given a rough insulating lining by spraying the inside with a liquid suspension of a powdered refractory material and a binder while the mould is heated to 260‹-800‹ F. A suitable composition may be produced by mixing 500-1000 grams of silica, flour with 10-40 grams of bentonite and 1 litre of water. The material is stirred while spraying and its composition, the shape and direction of the jet, the distance between mould and nozzle, the pressure of the atomizing air &c. may be varied to give the required degree of roughness so that the mould surface will retard relative movement of molten metal and reduce the rate of cooling by the amount desired to give an improved casting. The coating layer may be built up to 0.002 to 0. 08 inches in thickness and have 10 to 120 protuberances per lineal inch which project from 0.001 to 0.05 inch. Instead of silica, oxides of aluminium, magnesium, beryllium, zirconium, chromium, &c. may be used. The coating material in a container 27 may be applied to the hot rotating mould 10 by a nozzle 32 of a pipe 31 adjustable on a carriage 22 which is moved axially of the mould by a cylinder 36. A motor 28 drives an agitator in the container and a pump to circulate the material through pipes 29, 30 to the pipe 31.
